What’s The Book About?
In Full Contact Living I share six principles that have helped shape my success, not only on the mat as a martial artist, but as an entrepreneur, and in life. Central to my approach, is not what we do on the outside that matters most, but rather, how well we manage the inside. Baseball legend Yogi Berra noted, “90% of the game is half mental.” I guess what he was trying to say is that being great at anything really comes down to how well you win the battles on the inside. However, just as confusing as that statement from Berra may be, so was I confused when it came to actually making that happen. How do you build that inner game for success? This book attempts to answer that question.
In the book I outline the following six principles for peak performance success no matter if it’s in the ring, in the boardroom or in life:
- Principle 1: The Wabi Sabi of Performance- In life we want everything to be perfect. In fact most people don’t try to achieve anything because they are waiting for perfect to happen. Probably the biggest lesson I ever learned was that, while you are waiting for things to be just right, life happens. The sooner you come to grips with that, the sooner you can achieve personal success. In this section I talk about the paradox of imperfection, that is needed for perfect peak performance.
- Principle 2: Zen Mind, Warrior Body- Thinking isn’t inherently bad, but what you focus on can be. Reflecting on past mistakes, or planning for the future are crucial for long term achievement. But when it comes to performance, in the moment, where it matters most, past and future can get you into trouble. When your thoughts are moving into the past or the future, you can easily get caught up in the mental vortex, and spin out of control. Most importantly you lose contact with the present moment, the only moment you can fully respond with clarity. The truth is being present is hard work and in the section I show you how to achieve more focus in the midst of life’s chaos.
- Principle 3: Your Body Attitude Matters- How you hold your body, not only changes your physiology, it also changes how you think and feel. How you show up in the world matters more than you ‘think’. Scientists have discovered that some very simple gestures, such as how you shape your mouth, can affect your mental attitude. Bottom line, the fact is while our minds and bodies are different, they always go together. In this section I will introduce you to body attitude, and why it is essential for peak performance in any endeavour.
- Principle 4: Surfing The Edge of Chaos – As My Kid Says, “Like a Boss!”- In this section I will introduce you to mindfulness in action. Mindfulness is a state of being where you are able to just be present without judging the outcome of your performance. It involves not becoming attached to the way you are thinking, or attaching to whatever sensations are arising in your body, and how you are defining those as emotions. The outcome is the ability to be fully present, which then leads to what I call having a fluid mind. Mindfulness is crucial when dealing with difficult emotions and thoughts. Sounds like something we all need right? However, I believe that for mindfulness to be truly effective one has to be able to apply it in action, not sitting on a Zafu. In this section I introduce you to the idea of being mindful in action.
- Principle 5: Exhale- Breathing shouldn’t only be seen as something you do simply to stay alive, but rather, and equally important something you need in order to act. More and more, the medical community is realising that sympathetic dominance (fear/aggression response) underlies many modern-day maladies, including anxiety and hypertension. While all the variables of the root cause of sympathetic dominance are not completely understood, one root causes is, in fact, suboptimal breathing. This section looks at how to speak to your nervous system.
- Principle 6: Rolling With Life’s Punches- The mark of a true performer is their ability to bounce back from setbacks. But it is also about putting in the work. In this section I focus on resilience, the hustle and why I believe you need more challenge play in your life to truly be successful.
